What is boarding life in the UK like?

‘Having only experienced two years as a boarding school student, I still reckon the two years I spent at Bedford School will be the most spectacular  time in my life. I have built strong and long-lasting friendships during these two years, have learnt lots of life skills, and have gained unique experience,’ said Bryan Ng, a student at the University of Oxford pursuing an MChem Chemistry.

How UK education has made a positive difference to students' lives

It is not wrong to say a major part of education is studying, but most are often blinded by this and tend to ignore many other valuable aspects of school life. The UK education system allows students to take a step back and have a full view of what one can experience in their limited time at school.

The flexible system provides a suitable learning path for everyone. Students are generally given more chances to explore and develop their interests under this curriculum. Furthermore, schools provide more opportunities for students to step outside the classroom. And through these experiences and challenges, one can develop to become more responsible and independent and most importantly, have a better understanding of oneself.

As a trumpeter and mathematician, I have been extremely fortunate to receive full support from school on both aspects. For instance, I was offered the chance to participate in two school musicals, and had several concert appearances. On the academic side, staff at school were highly supportive of me pursuing studying Mathematics at Cambridge. I was even offered extra help outside regular lessons, which proved to be crucial in me securing a place.

Overall, UK schools have plenty to offer for those willing and prepared to be challenged.

Ann Lee, one of the winners of Study UK Summer School Competition 2017

“The course was designed to be both understandable and challenging; I was easily engaged in lectures even though I am not even a university student.”

While experiencing loneliness and confusion with London’s complex transportation system, as expected at the beginning of overseas study in a metropolitan city, Study UK Summer School competition winner Ann Lee shares her adventures of studying in the UK. From the teachers that always ‘made sure that no one was left out in any activity’ to her overcoming personal development hardships as ‘my greatest achievement on the trip’, read about some of the real experiences an international student enjoyed as Ann took part in the World Literature summer programme at SOAS, University of  London.

Will I be invited to an interview for my UCAS application?

For most international students applying through UCAS, if you are applying for medical-related programmes, or Oxford or Cambridge, you may be invited to an interview in person in the UK. Other programmes may ask you for an interview, but that will be arranged through video conferencing. Here’s advice on how to prepare, if you are invited to one.
